A Closer Look at the Dual Telephoto System

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra features a single periscope-style housing containing two telephoto lenses—one offering a 50MP resolution at 3.7x zoom, and the other a 12.5MP lens with an impressive 9.4x optical zoom. Both lenses share the same large 1/1.28-inch sensor, enabling consistent color and contrast across both zoom levels.

What sets this system apart is a motorized prism located between the lenses and the sensor. Depending on the selected zoom level, the prism shifts to direct light from the chosen lens to the sensor. It also blocks light from the inactive lens, ensuring optimal image clarity.

Though the mechanism is quick, it does not offer continuous zoom between 3.7x and 9.4x—only those two levels provide true optical quality.

Adding to the camera setup is a 50MP 1-inch primary sensor with OIS and a 40MP ultrawide lens, rounding out the quad-camera configuration.

Hardware and Software

Beyond the camera innovations, the Pura 80 Ultra features premium hardware, including a 6.8-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, powered by the 7nm Kirin 9020 SoC. It runs on EMUI 15, Huawei’s in-house operating system that does not rely on Android or Google Play Services. Powering the device is a robust 5,170mAh battery with fast 100W wired charging.

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra stands out primarily for its space-saving, sensor-sharing telephoto camera system—a smart engineering solution that prioritizes consistent image quality. While the lack of Google Play Services may limit appeal for some global users, photography enthusiasts and those open to Huawei’s ecosystem may find the Pura 80 Ultra a compelling flagship.
